HMRC service funding for extra business support

HMRC has more than doubled its funding for organisations that help people who need extra support with their tax affairs. This funding has resulted in up to £11.18 million over three years from April 2027.

The scheme is known as the Voluntary and Community Sector Grant Funding Scheme, and it funds free, independent help for people who:

  • struggle to understand their tax obligations
  • need support dealing with HMRC’s digital services
  • or for those who have complex circumstances.

Between April 2025 and April 2026 alone, over 43,000 people were helped through this scheme, and it’s expected to help even more.

More funding for tax and business debt advice

Separately, the Treasury has put an extra £4 million over three years into Business Debtline, run by the Money Advice Trust.

This is free, expert debt advice aimed specifically at small businesses, sole traders and the self-employed, a group that often struggles to find help that understands how personal and business finances overlap. The funding is expected to help an additional 16,000 businesses, taking the total supported to 75,000.

Why this support is beneficial to businesses

If you’re behind on tax, worried about mounting business debt, or finding HMRC’s systems hard to navigate, these are genuine, free resources, not something to be embarrassed about using.

Of the people helped through Business Debtline so far, over 90% saw their debts reduce or stabilise.
